Scott Carpenter (1925–2013)
Scott Carpenter was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and, in 1962, became the second American to orbit Earth. His career extended beyond space: in 1965, he joined the Navy’s SEALAB II project and spent 28 days living on the ocean floor, earning the rare title of both astronaut and aquanaut. Carpenter later directed operations for SEALAB III, underscoring his role in pushing the frontiers of exploration by air, sea, and space.
