James Michener (1907 – 1997)
James Michener was an American author whose work brought history and culture to a wide audience. His debut, Tales of the South Pacific, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948 and inspired the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific. His 1954 novel Sayonara was adapted into a successful film starring Marlon Brando, James Garner, Miyoshi Umeki, and Red Buttons, with both Umeki and Buttons earning Academy Awards. Over his career, Michener published more than forty books, including sweeping historical novels such as Hawaii and Centennial. A veteran of World War II service in the South Pacific, he drew on his experiences there to shape stories that combined historical depth with popular appeal.
