Carol Channing (1921–2019)
Carol Channing became a Broadway icon with starring roles in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949) and Hello, Dolly!(1964), winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the latter. She earned an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and brought her effervescent style to television variety shows, from The Andy Williams Show to The Muppet Show. Channing’s voice and comic timing made her one of theater’s most distinctive personalities.
