Eudora Welty (1909 – 2001)
Eudora Welty was an esteemed American author and photographer renowned for her insightful portrayals of the American South. Her notable works include the widely anthologized short stories A Worn Path, Death of a Traveling Salesman, and Why I Live at the P.O.. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1971 for her novel The Optimist’s Daughter. While working with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s, Welty used her spare time to photograph individuals across Mississippi, particularly the rural poor. These images were later compiled into her published collection, One Time, One Place (1971).
