Michael DeBakey (1908–2008)
Michael DeBakey transformed heart surgery with innovations such as the blood transfusion pump, which became integral to heart-lung machines. He pioneered procedures to repair aortic aneurysms, developed ventricular assist devices, and introduced prosthetic vascular grafts that saved countless lives. Honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science, DeBakey bridged surgical innovation and public health on a global scale.
