Byron White (1917 – 2002)
Byron White was an American professional football player, lawyer, and Supreme Court Justice, serving from 1962 to 1993. Known as “Whizzer” White during his football career, he was an All-American and a Heisman Trophy runner-up, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates (now the Steelers) and the Detroit Lions. White was also a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, served as a Navy officer in World War II, and earned his law degree from Yale. On the Supreme Court, he ruled on major issues, including the death penalty, civil rights, and contraceptive rights.
