Marva N. Collins (1936 – 2015)
Marva Collins, born in Monroeville, Alabama, became one of the nation’s most influential educators. After years of teaching in Chicago’s public schools, she grew disillusioned with how often Black children were mislabeled as “learning disabled” and denied opportunities. In 1975, she used her retirement savings to found Westside Preparatory School, where she built a rigorous, humane model rooted in high expectations and classical learning. Her story reached a national audience through The Marva Collins Story (1981), starring Cicely Tyson and Morgan Freeman, and through her appearances in popular culture, including a cameo in a 1994 Prince music video, “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”. Collins’ example offered a new vision of education that influenced schools across the United States and inspired Alabama teachers seeking to balance compassion with academic rigor.
