Karl Menninger (1893–1990)
Karl Menninger helped redefine psychiatry in America, advocating for more humane treatment of patients and expanding care for women, Native Americans, and children. In 1919, he co-founded the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, which grew into a world-renowned center for psychiatric care and training. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981, he left a legacy that tied psychiatry to broader struggles for dignity and justice.
