Jessica Tandy (1909 – 1994)
Jessica Tandy was a celebrated British-born actress whose career spanned more than 100 stage productions and 60 films. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Driving Miss Daisy (1989), becoming the oldest actor to receive the honor, and earned a Tony Award for her role in the original Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire (1948). Her work in Driving Miss Daisy, set in Atlanta and rooted in Southern themes of race and memory, resonated strongly in Alabama and across the South. Tandy also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963) and the popular film Cocoon (1985), leaving a legacy as a versatile and admired actress of the twentieth century.
