Jack Kilby (1923–2005)
Jack Kilby received the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the integrated circuit in 1958 while at Texas Instruments, a breakthrough that launched the modern electronics revolution. He also co-invented the handheld calculator and thermal printer and held patents for numerous other devices. Kilby’s integrated circuit powered Huntsville’s space industry and defense research, providing the computing capacity behind Apollo missions, missile systems, and the digital economy that reshaped Alabama’s industry.
