Ernst Stuhlinger (1913–2008)
Ernst Stuhlinger, a German-American rocket scientist, helped shape Huntsville into a center for space exploration. At NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, he directed the Space Science Laboratory (1960–1968) and later served as associate director (1968–1975). Beyond his official work, he co-founded the Rocket City Astronomical Association in 1954 and helped establish the observatory at Monte Sano State Park, tying advanced research to civic life in Alabama.
