Elmo R. Zumwalt (1920–2000)
Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt became the youngest Chief of Naval Operations and introduced sweeping reforms to modernize the U.S. Navy. Through more than 70 directives known as “Z-grams,” he worked to reduce racism and sexism, expand opportunities for sailors, and improve daily life in the service. After retiring, he served as president of the American Medical Building Corporation. In 2013, the Mesothelioma Center for Excellence was renamed the Elmo Zumwalt Treatment & Research Center in recognition of his legacy.
