The Historic Huntsville Foundation
Announces Madison County’s
Most Endangered Historic Places 2004

The following structures or groups of structures were chosen by the Historic Huntsville Foundation’s Preservation Committee in order to highlight some of our area’s most endangered historic buildings. Threats to these structures include demolition, apathy, neglect, vandalism, development, and insensitive public policy.

We are fortunate that our community continues to grow. As a result, however, we are faced with formidable challenges to historic preservation that include urban sprawl, rural decline, insufficient public and private funding, and the ever-present challenge to educate a new generation about the merits of conserving visual and tangible reminders of our past.

The Historic Huntsville Foundation hopes this list will result in an increased awareness, appreciation, and protection of these and other structures that document our history.

They contribute to our community’s unique identity, impart a sense of place, provide links to our heritage, and enrich our quality of life.
