On April 26th, the Alabama National Register Review Board approved the National Register nominations for Five Points Historic District and Maple Hill Cemetery. The presentations to the Board were made by Dr. West.
The Maple Hill Cemetery nomination stirred the most conversation among the Board members because of the historical documentation that the cemetery provides and for the fact that the Board does not have the opportunity to review many cemetery nominations. In the Five Points presentation, the Board cited the significance of the contributing structures spanning such a lengthy period from the late 1800's through 1960, forming a very cohesive neighborhood.
In the next few weeks, the Alabama Historical Commission will put the final touches on the nominations and forward them to the National Park Service for action which can take up to 45 days. More updates to follow!
